What is a Project Milestone?
A milestone is a meaningful checkpoint in a project – a stage that groups related tasks and marks real progress toward the final delivery, such as ‘design approved’, ‘development complete’, or ‘client sign-off’. Instead of staring at a long, flat list of tasks, milestones let you see a project as a sequence of stages, each with its own tasks, dates, and completion status. This module brings that concept into Odoo Project: you create milestones, attach the relevant tasks to each one, and manage the project’s journey stage by stage rather than task by task.
Why Do You Need Milestone Management?
On its own, a task list tells you what needs doing but not how far along the project actually is or whether work is happening in the right order. That makes it hard to report progress, spot slippage, or stop a team jumping ahead before the groundwork is done. Milestones fix this by giving the project a backbone: each stage has a clear meaning, a deadline, and a set of tasks, so progress and delivery become easy to read at a glance. This module goes further by enforcing the logic between stages – if one milestone is set as the next step after another, you simply cannot start it until the earlier milestones are complete – and by validating start and end dates so timelines stay realistic. You can chain milestones by defining a next milestone, and the module then blocks work on a later stage until its predecessors are finished, while date constraints keep the start and end dates sensible. From the project itself, a smart button shows all of that project’s milestones in one place, and each task form displays which milestone it belongs to – so whether you are looking at the whole project, a single stage, or an individual task, the milestone picture is always right there.
